The leading bilingual school in Thailand, Amnuay Silpa School (ANS) is dedicated to preserving the Thai language and culture in its students’ educational experience. ANS’s 90-year history includes educating six former prime ministers and over 70,000 alumni! The school was established in 1926 by the grandfather of the current CEO, Khun Petchuda.
Recognized by ONESCA, the Thai national endorsing body, ANS is a candidate for 2020 accreditation with the Council of International Schools. This day school offers the British and New Zealand National Curricula along with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education to 1,125 mostly Thai students in Grades pre-K–12. ANS has successfully implemented the unique Synchronised Dual Teaching Model, integrating the U.K. and Thai curricula. The teaching staff of 175 includes 80 Thai educators, 75 from the U.K., and one from North America.
From Reception to Year 6, ANS has developed an evolving technology curriculum that covers programming, computational thinking, web 2.0 and the use of software and tools that help students design across the disciplines. Specialist engineering teachers on staff guide learners all the way to advanced robotics in the secondary school, and a range of after-school clubs for all ages focus on robotics. All classrooms at ANS are equipped with computers, interactive whiteboards, and sound systems for multimedia presentations. In the Foundation Phase, a computer lab is available for use by Nursery to Year 2, and there are two laptop carts available for the Primary Phase. Additionally, each year group makes use of six student iPads.
To enhance a sense of community and teamwork, ANS uses a House system, whereby students are assigned to one of four houses when they enter the school and remain there until they leave. Each house has a flag and is represented by a different color, animal, and set of values. Students can earn points for their house by participating in various sporting events throughout the year. In the classroom environment and around the school, students can gain house points for displaying positive behavior, including completing work at a high standard, going out of their way to help others, and showing initiative.
Over 100 after-school activities are led by ANS teachers and qualified outside providers. Chess, robotics, yoga, Zumba, science, art & craft, ballet, cooking, STEM clubs, Thai dance, Thai or Western music, Chinese, Japanese, are just some of the activities offered. For sport, students may enjoy swimming, taekwondo, aikido, basketball, football, badminton, table tennis, and netball.
Since 2014, one very popular extra-curricular activity for secondary students at ANS has been The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. This non-competitive self-guided journey has become highly valued by universities and employers. The award aims to not only recognize achievements and excellence in students around the world but also to equip them with a sense of adventure, a love for the outdoors, and community responsibility. Beginning in Year 10, participants in the International Award develop themselves through a variety of activities: skill, physical recreation, community service, and a multi-day adventurous journey. Over the past few years, Year 10 participants (Bronze) have trekked throughout Khao Yai National Park and Year 11 participants (Silver) have camped on remote tropical islands while kayaking in Southern Thailand. The school eagerly awaits the assignment for Year 12 participants (Gold)!
ANS organizes educational excursions for students of every age. While the youngest students travel locally, upper primary and secondary students travel further and stay overnight. International trips have included an art trip to New York and a trip to Cambodia for a charity project. The trips provide rich opportunities for students to develop and reinforce their English language abilities.
Because students and teachers at ANS are committed to being responsible global citizens, the whole school—Nursery through Year 12—takes part in the Charity Committee, which partners with United World Schools to fund a school in a disadvantaged rural area. In previous years, the school has also held several fundraising events to donate to the SET charity, which helps children in Thailand to study at through the university level. Last year, Year 12 students sold cakes every Monday during break time and organized a charity concert to earn funds for the maintenance of the Khuan Petch School as well as scholarships for ten of their students. Additionally, they volunteered by teaching Khuan Petch students English through games. Through at least one of these activities, the entire school is involved in giving the gift of education to children who would otherwise not receive it.
ANS is interested in hiring certified teachers, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider interns and exceptional newly-certified candidates. Teachers need not possess an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Certified candidates up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.
The benefits package includes a moving allowance, initial airfare, and roundtrip airfare every two years thereafter. The tuition benefit is 100% for the first child and 50% for subsequent children, with staff paying for the uniform. ANS is very committed to professional development and maintains a healthy annual budget for this. Other pluses include a subsidized lunch program for staff and subsidized after-school activities for children of staff. Local health insurance is fully paid and includes emergency evacuation. The school also maintains an additional fund of $10,000 per staff member for reimbursement of expenses that exceed the medical coverage.
