Since 1952, Colegio Jorge Washington (COJOWA) has been offering the best of a dual American/Colombian educational system. The pre-K–12 school’s modern, purpose-built campus was completed in 2009. Just 20 minutes from the heart of the city of Cartagena, the 49-acre main campus contains three independent wings for elementary, middle, and high school. Within these three wings are three science laboratories, two music rooms, a central two-story library, two audio visual rooms, three computer labs, and two learning centers to support children with diagnosed learning disabilities.
Cartagena—the fifth largest city in Colombia—sits on the Caribbean Coast of northern Colombia. With its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and vibrant markets, Cartagena’s charm attracts cruise ships and visitors from all over the world. In addition to strolling through the walled city, you can sail, swim, and kite surf. The Rosario Islands are also just 45 minutes away.
Accredited by both the Colombian Ministry of Education and Cognia, COJOWA currently enrolls over 790 students, most of whom are Colombian. The remaining 5% represent 16 nationalities. Beginning with Montessori, the school subsequently offers with the U.S. Common Core curriculum and Advanced Placement courses in the upper grade levels. The staff of 75 comprises 52 Colombian educators and 23 from North America. At COJOWA, motivated students, dedicated staff, and committed parents fulfill the school’s mission of “Learning together as reflective citizens and innovative thinkers to build a better tomorrow.”
The school’s sports facilities include four outdoor multi-use courts, two full-sized soccer fields, a softball diamond, and an air-conditioned coliseum for both sports and fine arts programs. COJOWA’s modern preschool facility is located in the city within close proximity to residential neighborhoods.
During an extended lunch period for high school students, teachers offer students set office hours, and clubs and activities flourish. These clubs range from student government, National Honor Society, and Model United Nations to service offerings such as Interact, a U.S.-based service organization, or Agape, a school-specific service group led by students.
The school is interested in hiring certified singles and couples, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider exceptional, newly-certified candidates and those certified in non-English speaking countries. Teachers must hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Those up the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.
Benefits include a moving allowance and annual roundtrip airfare to the point of origin. Tuition is free for teachers’ dependents; however, registration fees, lunch, transportation, and uniform fees are not. Every Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm, staff participates in professional development sessions. And each year, the school offers a two-day professional development program on campus. Worldwide health insurance is provided for emergencies while traveling. Full health care coverage is provided within Colombia.
