Overseas Teaching Positions in London

Dwight School London (Dwight) is situated in the northern suburbs of London, a 30-minute train ride from central London. The school is in a middle class suburb with mixed housing, close enough to enjoy the delights of the city but far enough away to access affordable housing and the countryside.

As a member of the Independent Schools Council (ISC), Dwight is regularly inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate to ensure that it meets ISC standards. Dwight currently enrolls 295 K-12 students of 50 nationalities, with 35% from the U.K. and 10% from North America. All three levels of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme are delivered. The teaching staff of 69 comprises 30 teachers from the U.K and two from North America.

Dwight’s after-school program offers an abundance of choices for the lower school students each day of the week. Forest School trains students in tying knots, building shelters, using tools, identifying trees/wildlife, bush craft, and fire safety. In a musical theatre class called Showstoppers, students learn choreography, songs, and scenes from musicals, and play drama games in order to develop technique and skills. Other choices after school include painting, origami, karate, Creativity Club, Hip Hop Dance, ball sports, knitting, volleyball, playground games, Cartoon Drawing Club, Football or Running Club, and Spark Tank for budding entrepreneurial innovators.

Just as exciting are the upper school extracurricular offerings, some of which include Model United Nations, film school, drama, Random Acts (of Kindness) group, creative writing, fitness, gardening, teen yoga, programming, debate, and the Maths Club. Students can join Airgineers in the spring term, in which team members design, build, and pilot two sizes of drones in a national drone racing competition. Other unique opportunities include joining the Dwight TV and Media Club as well as helping to organize the Shanghai Music trip.

The PE Department at Dwight Lower School offers opportunities to participate in football, basketball, netball, floor hockey, cricket, tennis, and badminton. The program also aims to expose students to as many different sports as possible at a young age, including golf, rock climbing, archery, orienteering, dance, and gymnastics. Both girls and boys in the lower school may try out each year for competitive football, swimming, and cross country teams. Those selected train and compete against other schools in London.

The upper school Physical and Health Education Department also develops students’ abilities in a variety of sports. Students wishing to compete in football, basketball, and netball can benefit from high-level coaching. All students are welcome to attend training sessions and compete against other independent schools. Those who excel at individual or other group sports are assisted by the school with introductions to local competitive teams and organizations involved in golf, tennis, swimming, go-carting, baseball, and both boys’ and girls’ football.

Dwight is interested in hiring singles, interns, and couples, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider outstanding newly-certified candidates, experienced locals lacking certification, and those certified in non-English speaking countries. Teachers need not hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching, and there is no age limit for certified teachers to obtain a work visa.

The benefits package includes a moving allowance, an 85% discount on tuition fees for dependent children along with free school lunch. Dwight contributes 16% to a retirement plan, which will likely increase to 23% as of September 2019. Professional development includes regular IB training as well as 33% financial support for approved master’s programs. There are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners. The Dwight package amounts to a bit of savings.
