Overseas Teaching Opportunities in Turkey

Eyüboglu Educational Institutions, established as one school in the Kadiköy district of Istanbul in 1985, has expanded to educate students in seven different districts, with a total of fifteen schools on the Anatolian and European sides of Istanbul. Eyüboglu is the first Turkish educational institution authorized to implement three of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. When the schools were accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the Eyüboglu Educational Institutions became the largest CIS-accredited educational institution in the world.

The school has an excellent reputation among parents and students in Turkey for many reasons: its high academic standards, cohesive educational approach, impressive results on national and international exams, strong language acquisition program, successful implementation and integration of both the IB programmes and the National Curriculum, and, finally, its facilities geared towards students’ social development.

Eyüboglu offers numerous opportunities for students outside the classroom, through extracurricular activities, summer/winter schools, and field trips. The location of the school offers convenient transportation for school excursions. The campus is also very close to the historical and cultural areas of Istanbul.

Currently enrolled are 1,628 K–12 students, mostly Turkish, with 2% from North America and the U.K. The teaching staff of 363 includes 230 teachers from Turkey and 18 from North America and the U.K.

Eyüboglu prefers to hire single teachers, interns, and couples with a non-teaching spouse. They would also consider teaching couples, those certified in a non-English speaking country, and outstanding newly-certified teachers. Candidates need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Teachers lacking certification may only work as teaching assistants or specialist teachers in Grades 1–3 and must be approved by the Ministry of Education. In Turkey, work visas may be obtained up to the age of 55.

The benefits package includes a fully-furnished flat with utilities included, a moving allowance, and initial airfare. Professional development is provided as well as transportation to and from the school and free lunch. The tuition benefit is a 25% discount for one child for the first four years, after which the discount will double. For other children, the discount on tuition remains at 25%. Local private health insurance, both in and outpatient, is covered by the school in the first year. In subsequent years, Turkey’s Health and Social Security Department covers outpatient expenses. Because of the low cost of living in Turkey, a reasonable amount of savings is possible on this package—or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary. There are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners.
