Overseas Teaching Opportunities in Mexico

Another fine school has joined Search Associates! Colegio Eton, a pre-K–12 day school, is located in Santa Fe, one of Mexico City's major business districts in the west part of the city. Colegio Eton, also known as Eton School, celebrates diversity and welcomes families from different cultures, nationalities, religions, and ideologies. They say,

“Our school fosters universal ethical and moral values by embracing fundamental human rights, which constitute the basis of its pluralistic and multicultural spirit.”

Eton School was founded in 1990 by Ms. Margarita Arzac, a knowledgeable and well-recognized Mexican educator and visionary. Two of the school’s co-founders, Head of School Ms. Liz Panchuk and Early Childhood and Elementary Academic Principal Ms. Yvonne Kogan, are also current members of the institution’s Board of Directors.

Eton School is fully accredited by AdvancEd as well as by both the Mexican Ministry of Education (SEP) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Currently, 1,539 K–12 students of 20 nationalities are enrolled, with 85% from Mexico and 7% from North America and the U.K. The teaching staff of 118 includes 90 from Mexico and 15 from North America and the U.K.

Colegio Eton’s curriculum includes the Reggio Emilia and the inquiry-based learning approach for the elementary level. These interdisciplinary programs are taught in both English and Spanish. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma Programmes are followed next. Extracurricular opportunities include a wide variety of sports and physical activities, such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, physical fitness, cheerleading, track & field, and taekwondo, among others. Students interested in the arts may pursue choir, theater, dance, and musical instrument classes based on the Suzuki method. Colegio Eton’s website describes the unique design of the facilities:

"We incorporate nature into our atmosphere so that our students appreciate it, become sensitive to its elements, and are motivated to become responsible [for] their planet. . . Other areas were designed for our students to be inspired to read and write, to be able to express themselves through the arts, to gain composure, to stay connected with their families, to promote . . . [the] building [of] relationships, and to be able to explore the power within their bodies.”

Colegio Eton is interested in hiring singles and couples with non-teaching spouses. They will also consider exceptional, newly-certified teachers, teaching couples, and interns. While native English speakers are preferable, Colegio Eton will consider applications of those certified in non-English speaking countries. Candidates must be certified, but they need not have an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching, and there is no age limit to obtain a work visa in Mexico.

The salary and benefits package at Colegio Eton, combined with the low cost of living, presents a potential for savings or the opportunity for a family of four to live on one salary. The school provides a five-month, shared accommodation for newcomers. After that initial five-month period, teachers will receive a monthly stipend for accommodation of their own choosing. Base salaries can be augmented—for example, for native English speakers, for those who take school-approved courses, for each year of service, and for those who teach IB classes. With regards to airfare, one flight is provided annually as of the second year of employment. Local health insurance is fully covered for teachers, who, after one year of employment, may buy insurance for their dependents. Tuition benefits are also covered by the school, but conditions apply to each individual case. Additionally, Colegio Eton contributes 9% of a teacher’s base salary to a retirement plan. Other added bonuses include daily lunch, after-school programs, and sports fees.
