The sea around Xiamen City glimmers in the sunlight and ships in the harbour creak with the rippling waves. The city centre itself is located on Xiamen Island just off the southeastern coast of China’s Fujian province... Its relatively small population means it is rarely crowded, which only adds to the peaceful atmosphere… Having played host to visitors and residents of various ethnicities throughout the years, Xiamen is a real melting pot of architectural styles, religions, and cultures from across the globe. From traditional Taoist temples to European-style cathedrals, the city is a hectic mixture of Eastern and Western influences.
AXIS campus features a large track and field and a beautiful theater. A distinctive feature can be found in the library where multi-level bamboo towers, inspired by Chinese culture, represent the virtues of strength, flexibility and wellness. About its campus, the school says on its website,
AXIS prepares students for a world that is interdependent, complex, and unpredictable through the intentional partnership amongst pedagogy, curriculum, technology, and space. Licensed by the ministry of education, the school is also pending accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Currently enrolled are 158 students of seven nationalities. AXIS uses inquiry-based learning while following the U.S. Common Core and Advanced Placement classes. The teaching staff of 26 includes four Chinese educators.
A nice range of extra-curricular activities are offered three days per week each semester. Primary students may attend the following, offered on different days: Legos, Chinese music and movement, robot coding, cartoon drawing, sketching, softball, rock climbing, archery, cardio boxing, Soccer Club, and Flag Football Club. Secondary students may participate in Student Council, Print Making Club, tennis, archery, table tennis, Spelling B, Flag Football Club, badminton, and rock climbing.
Each year AXIS secondary students participate in a Week Without Walls. As the name indicates, students learn outside of the classroom where they explore the culture and environment of China while learning more about its significant traditions and history.
AXIS hires certified candidates of diverse profiles wishing to teach abroad, including couples with a non-teaching partner. Teachers must hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per government regulations, those up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.
The overseas teaching benefits package includes allowances for settling in, monthly housing, and annual airfare families and dependents. Tuition and fees for after school activities are paid in full for up to three dependents. Professional development, contributing to the improvement of the school (team) as well as for personal enrichment, is encouraged and supported. Worldwide health insurance—except for the U.S.—is fully covered and includes life and dental. Teachers can purchase U.S. coverage on their own.
