Overseas Teaching at Aoba-Japan International School

Search Associates welcomes back Aoba-Japan International School (AJIS) to its catalog of premier member schools. Nestled in the heart of Tokyo, AISJ is a pre-K-12, day school whose three campuses offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at every level along with an innovative Global Leadership Program.

Fully accredited by the Council of International Schools, AJIS uses inquiry-based learning to deliver the IB Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes. Currently enrolled are 712 students, 212 of whom represent 30 nationalities. Thirty-eight percent of the current teaching staff is from Japan.

Hikarigaoka Campus, serving students in K-Grade 9, is in a leafy residential area 30 minutes from downtown Tokyo. The campus is about a 15-minute walk from Hikarigaoka Station, and a shuttle bus service runs from Hikarigaoka Station to a stop near campus. Hikarigaoka’s After School Program (APA) offers a wide variety of activities, such as coding; writing; Street Dance; Music for Fun; Guitar for Beginners; arts & crafts; and football, basketball, volleyball, and E-sports.

Meguro Campus was established for early learners, K2-K5. Situated in a quiet residential area between two big parks, the school comprises two buildings, one for learners between 18 months to four years old and the other for students ages four to six. All Meguro graduates may join Grade 1 at Hikarigaoka Campus. Meguro’s APA includes swimming lessons; karate; violin; language instruction or reinforcement for Spanish, English, or Japanese; and computer programming for K4 and K5 students. A school bus service is available for all students.

Bunkyo Campus was recently developed for Grades 10-12 as a result of AJIS’s continued growth in enrollment, program development, and significant achievements of its senior school students. In addition to classroom spaces, the purpose-built campus includes a Presentation Room, Production Studios, Student Meeting Rooms, a Wellness Center, an Immersive Learning Room, and a Theatre Room. Bunkyo’s APA offers SAT Mathematics, Mad Scientists’ Experiment Club, Studio Recording & Music Technology, Cooking Together, Creative Writing & Publishing, and Designing Virtual, STEAM, SAT Mathematics, and Japanese Proficiency Test Preparation.

AJIS hires certified singles and couples of diverse profiles wishing to teach overseas, including those with a non-teaching partner and newly certified candidates. They would also consider interns. Teachers need not hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching, and there is no age limit for certified educators to obtain a work visa in Japan.

The benefits package includes allowances for settling in and airfare. A Needs-Based Scholarship Program is available to all staff members’ children. In addition to regular professional development, a Thought Leadership program is available, which enables teachers to apply for funding to present at conferences. Local health insurance, including dental and long-term disability, is provided, with the employee paying a percentage. All employees in Japan contribute to a compulsory pension program. There are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners.
