Island Living Meets International Education at Morna International College, Spain

Imagine teaching abroad on the beautiful island of Ibiza. Just minutes from the charming village of Santa Gertrudis, Morna International College (MIC) offers an international education to students from Early Years Foundation Stage through Year 13 in a spacious, tranquil campus environment. With abundant outdoor space and thoughtfully designed facilities, the school creates a setting where students and educators can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

The campus includes two large outdoor sports courts, a wooded fitness and walking trail, and a temporary indoor sports area soon to be replaced by a purpose-built gymnasium. A distinctive feature of MIC is its large garden area, complete with a pond and hens. This space enriches the curriculum while allowing the school to produce some of its own food, supporting hands-on learning and environmental awareness.

Technology also plays an important role in the learning experience. Classrooms are equipped with modern interactive screens, and the school’s robust network provides bandwidth for hundreds of connected devices. Secondary students work on individual laptops, while primary classes regularly use shared sets of iPads.

Early Years students benefit from facilities specifically designed for ages three to five. Their learning environment includes three main classrooms, additional shared indoor and outdoor work areas, a well-equipped playground, and a sports pitch tailored to this age group.

Primary students learn in bright, well-equipped classrooms, each with direct access to outdoor activity areas. The primary section also includes specialized spaces for computing and Spanish language instruction, along with a dedicated primary library. Expansive outdoor play areas with artificial grass and a fully equipped play park provide ample space for recreation and exploration.

Secondary students rotate through subject-specific classrooms, including three well-equipped science laboratories, a music room with a recording annex, and two art studios featuring a photographic darkroom and a design technology room. Additional facilities include a computer room, a spacious library, and a separate common room for A Level students.

Authorized by the Spanish Ministry of Education and inspected under the British Schools Overseas (BSO) framework by the British Council, MIC delivers the full British National Curriculum alongside the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. The school is also a member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain. The school serves approximately 640 students representing more than 20 nationalities: about one-third Spanish, one-third British, and one-third from countries around the world. A teaching team of about 80 ensures a staff-to-student ratio of fewer than seven students per teacher. Spanish colleagues make up 24% of the faculty, contributing valuable local expertise to the international staff community.

Students also benefit from a wide-ranging after-school activities program designed to nurture diverse interests. From gardening and arts and crafts to music lessons and language learning, there is something for every child. Students from all year groups may also attend Homework Club three days a week, where teachers support quiet study and independent learning.

MIC seeks experienced, certified teachers from diverse backgrounds and welcomes applicants with a non-teaching partner. Teachers must hold a degree in the subject they plan to teach. Notably, Spanish government regulations do not impose an age limit for obtaining a work visa.

The benefits package for those teaching abroad includes allowances for moving and two months initial rental costs as well as subsidized school lunch. Teachers pay only 10% of  their children’s tuition. All staff have access to professional development. With regards to health insurance, the school states, “Staff are entitled to full state health, unemployment, and sickness benefits plus state pension.”
