International Teaching Vacancies in New York

Founded in 1872 in New York City, Dwight School (Dwight) is an internationally renowned K–12 independent school, committed to educating the next generation of innovative global leaders, one student at a time.

Providing an individualized experience for each student through the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, Dwight is dedicated to "igniting the spark of genius" in every child. Dwight has been recognized by the IB Organization as a world leader in international education and is part of the Dwight network of global schools that includes institutions in London, Seoul, Shanghai, and Dubai.

Accredited by New York State, the Council of International Schools, and the Middle States Association, Dwight currently enrolls 800 students, representing 32 nationalities, with 70% from North America and 3% from the U.K. The teaching staff of 180 includes 160 from North America and two from the U.K. The school is authorized by the IB Organization to deliver all three levels of the IB Programme. In addition to guiding students through the Creativity, Activity, and Service component of the IB program, Dwight offers a wonderful opportunity for budding entrepreneurs, inspired by the TV show Shark Tank. The school’s website describes it:

Spark Tank is Dwight's incubator, a program conceived and sponsored by the Dwight School Foundation, designed to nurture student innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills beyond the classroom. Beginning in kindergarten, students can participate in the Spark Tank Program to develop their ideas for new businesses, non-profits, or products.

Dwight’s after-school activities includes a drop-in program called "Club House" that is available from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Club House provides students with a structured but relaxed environment in which to read or do homework, play with friends, draw, and enjoy board games and outside activity time. Students also have the opportunity to join both age-specific and mixed-age activities run by Dwight’s skilled staff.

Dwight’s after-school program runs fall, winter, and spring sessions. Examples of activities offered to lower school students are acrobatics, fencing, cooking, and mine craft. Middle school students can choose among debate, anime, fashion design, dodgeball, mock trial, yearbook, and hip hop dance. Upper school students explore activities like mock trial, digital photography, yearbook, and feminist club.

The 40,000 square-foot Dwight Athletic Center, which opened in 2012, features a 25-yard, six-lane pool, two roof-top tennis courts, a regulation-size high school gym with a full basketball and volleyball court, and a dance studio. Dwight is one of 20 schools in the Randall's Island Field Group, so many of its field sports are played at that location. These fine facilities allow the school to offer baseball, golf, rugby, track and field, and tennis in the spring; soccer, volleyball, and cross country in the fall; and basketball and swimming in the winter.

Dwight prefers to hire single teachers but would consider interns and couples, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider exceptional newly-certified teachers, experienced local teachers lacking certification, and those certified in non-English speaking countries. Teachers must possess an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. While there is no age limit to obtain a work visa, candidates must be certified to apply for one.

The benefits package includes a competitive salary and a moving allowance. Dwight contributes 3% to a retirement plan, with the potential to increase over time. To qualify for a tuition benefit, teachers must apply to the Financial Aid Department. Worldwide health insurance—including dental and life insurance—is covered, with the employee paying a percentage of the premium. Other bonuses include free lunch for students Grades K–7 and a discount on after-school programming. At Dwight, a very generous professional development program supports the needs of all faculty and staff.
