International Teaching Jobs in The Bahamas

Founded in 1998, Lucaya International School, Bahamas (LIS) is a college preparatory, non-profit school, governed by a Board of Directors, and designed to serve the children of the local and international communities living on the island of Grand Bahama.

Accredited by both the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, LIS currently enrolls 220 K–12 students of 19 nationalities. More than half of the students are from The Bahamas, with 25% from North America, and 10% from the U.K. This day school is authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years and Diploma Programmes along with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. All classes are offered in English, with the exception of modern language courses. The educational program is modeled along North American, British, and IB Organization guidelines. The school year runs from mid-August to mid-June, with a minimum instructional period of 175 days divided into two semesters. The teaching staff of 35 includes 22 from North America and the U.K. and eight Bahamians.

LIS aims to build sports teams for volleyball, softball, basketball, track and field, and soccer, with all grade levels participating. Though the school emphasizes fun, sportsmanship, and fair play, the teams have managed to be quite competitive! In recent years, three LIS students have been named Player of the Year in their respective sports, and the school has won island championships in volleyball, basketball, and soccer. LIS is a member of The Inter-Island Competitive Sports Program, which organizes tournaments with international schools in Nassau, namely St. Andrews and Lyford Cay. The school also competes in the Grand Bahama Primary & Secondary Sports Association Leagues.

For those who want to play sports in a non-competitive environment, LIS has its own House System, in which students are assigned to one of three houses: Red Snappers, Blue Marlins, and Green Morays. Quarterly intramural athletic competitions among the houses happen during the school day. The highlight of the House System competition usually takes place in February on Sports Day, and is dedicated to track and field activities. All students, along with their parents and staff members, participate and earn points for their respective House Teams.

The LIS Activity Program offers a range of extra-curricular activities across four major areas of interest: sports/recreational activities, performing arts, academic pursuits, and arts & crafts. Examples of clubs offered in the past year include the following: Arts & Crafts, High School Production, Yoga, Tennis, Basketball, Girls Health & Fitness, Soccer, Sailing, Kung Fu, Ultimate Frisbee, Skateboarding, Buccaneer Beach Club, Movie Maker, Computer Club, Beginner's French, Scrapbooking, Yearbook, and Board Games.

LIS is interested in hiring single teachers but would consider couples, including those with a non-teaching partner. They will also consider exceptional newly-certified candidates, experienced teachings lacking certification, and those certified in non-English speaking countries. Teachers need not hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. There is no age limit to obtain a work visa in The Bahamas.

The benefits package includes a housing allowance, free tuition for the first child, and 50% for the second. Worldwide health insurance is fully covered. LIS provides professional development as well. Due to the low cost of living in The Bahamas, this benefits package amounts to some savings.
