International Teaching in the Heart of Taiwan’s Silicon Valley

The International Bilingual School at Hsinchu Science Park (IBSH) takes pride in offering bilingual and bicultural education in a tight-knit community that encourages the pursuit of excellence. Founded in 1983, IBSH describes itself as “a highly competitive, academic-oriented college prep school… that aims to inspire students to become innovative, inquiring, and compassionate self-directed learners who strive to make a difference in the global community.”

The school is situated in Taiwan's Silicon Valley, the high-tech science-park whose development began in the 1980s and is now a cornerstone of Taiwan’s tech industry. At present, the Hsinchu Science Park is home to more than 500 tech companies supporting industries such as integrated circuits, telecommunications, and biotechnology.

Accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the ROC Ministry of Education and administered by both the ROC Ministry of Education and the National Science Council, IBSH offers a bilingual curriculum that follows the U.S. Common Core followed by choices of Advanced Placement courses. Currently enrolled are 511 students representing 20 nationalities in Grades 1-12. Approximately half of the students and 60% of the full-time teaching staff are Taiwanese.

IBSH is proud to offer a rich after-school life for its students. They are encouraged to participate in the many athletic programs, such as basketball, swimming, badminton, soccer, track & field, cheerleading, volleyball, softball, baseball, and cross country. Grades 1-2 may explore Mad Science, conducting exciting, hands-on experiments. They may also choose from a variety of other clubs, for example, dance and basketball. Grades 3-6 may join Art or Drama Club. For Grades 7-12, extracurriculars include the following—some of which are student-run: United Nations, World Scholars Cup, Global Issues Network, UNICEF, Key Club, InterAct, Robotics Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, Fitness Club, Paw Print (newspaper), Yearbook, and the daily bulletin.

IBSH hires certified singles and couples of diverse profiles wishing to teach abroad, including couples with a non-teaching partner and newly certified teachers.  Candidates must hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per government regulations, those up to the age of 65 may obtain a work visa.

The benefits package includes a moving allowance, furnished housing on or off campus, and annual airfare for those teaching abroad. Tuition for dependents is free but does not cover school supplies. Every year, teachers are allotted a substantial stipend for professional development. Local health insurance is fully covered, and Taiwanese national health insurance fully covers dental and vision.
