From Student to Counselor: Joseph Baek’s Global Career in Education

Life in international schools offers a vibrant and enriching experience, shaping students into global citizens who often pursue careers in education worldwide. This was the path for Joseph Baek—fluent in Korean, English, and conversational in Chinese—who grew up attending an international school and later found his calling as a school counselor.

Born in South Korea, Joseph became a third culture kid in 1996 when his family relocated to China for his father’s work with Samsung. He began his education at a small Christian international school, where he stayed through graduation in a class of just 23 students. “It was fun!” he recalls with a smile. After returning to South Korea for university, Joseph’s journey took him back to China, then Brazil, and soon, Malaysia—with the guidance of Search Associates (SEARCH) paving the way.

Joseph’s career in international education was inspired by a conversation during an inter-school conference hosted back in Korea when he was in high school. A counselor recognized his natural empathy and listening skills, encouraging him to consider the profession. That moment left a lasting impression, leading Joseph to major in psychology in college and earn a master’s in divinity. Though he initially explored corporate work in Korea, he realized quickly that his passion lay in supporting students. Volunteering at international school camps confirmed his true calling.

In 2019, Joseph was hired at an international school in Korea to work in the Student Life Department, engaging closely with secondary students through extracurricular activities, assemblies, and experiential learning programs. When the pandemic struck, many were leaving China—but Joseph felt the pull to return to his second home.

By mid-2020, Joseph began searching for a counseling role in China. Recognizing the high demand for school counselors, a friend recommended he register with Search Associates. Once he did, the process became seamless:

The SEARCH platform allowed me to see exactly what was open at strong schools. My priorities were clear—location and a non-profit school with a caring culture that values mental health. On SEARCH, I could view school introduction files and videos, and my Associates connected me with people who could speak to the school’s environment.

The American International School of Guangzhou hired Joseph in 2021 as a middle school counselor, with the understanding that he would earn his master’s and licensure in counseling, which he did through Concordia University’s online program for international counselors. Though the pandemic years were challenging, they solidified his experience and deepened his commitment to international counseling.

After two years in China, Joseph reactivated his SEARCH account, finding the platform invaluable. He explains,

The way the platform accumulates my records is fantastic. All I had to do was add the latest recommendations and update what was already there. It is also so convenient, being able to view a school profile. The details I really want to know before I apply are there, and once I decide to apply, it’s just a click of a button.

A “soft search” led Joesph to an opening at Escola Graduada in São Paulo, Brazil—an opportunity he embraced wholeheartedly. This time, location was less of a priority; instead, the position, school culture, and community drew him in.

The move was even more meaningful when his partner, Chloe Yoon, joined him. The two met at church while attending different middle schools in China, lost touch after graduation, then reconnected on Instagram over a decade later. Chloe, a special education teacher in Korea, shared Joseph’s passion for international education. The couple officially began dating when Joseph visited home during his holiday. Their commitment compelled Chloe to make the leap to Brazil as Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo was able to hire her part time as part of the Graded Optimal Learning Services Team.

As Joseph and Chloe, who will marry in June 2025, considered their long-term future, they realized that proximity to family had become a priority. Joseph expressed the desire to start a new search—this time with his fiancé—his Associates voiced their concerns. Joseph explains,

Harry and Margaret Deelman were such a big help because they are experts, and they are very  realistic when giving suggestions. They do not give me high hopes about different things. They suggested I stay in Brazil a few more years as I don’t want to be seen as “first contract person.

Joseph’s expertise as a counselor made him a sought-after candidate, nevertheless. After hearing Harry and Margaret's suggestion, he decided to do another soft search. A scan through Open Positions revealed one at the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL). Joseph says,

As always, the SEARCH platform made it very easy to apply for the position, and soon enough, ISKL contacted me to schedule an interview. From there, it was smooth sailing, with multiple rounds of warm and honest interviews.”

The school’s location, caring community, and need for a middle school counselor made it a great fit, even though there is not yet a position for Chloe. To Malaysia they will go, and in Malaysia they wish to stay. The Deelmans, of course, are proud and delighted!

With six years of experience in international school counseling, and a few job searches under his belt, Joseph offers this advice to those considering the journey:

Moving internationally is a big decision, and it won’t be perfect. However, thorough research and preparation make all the difference. Seek out a supportive community where you feel valued and happy. And remember, networking is essential—educators in the international school world are well-connected, and building relationships will be a key resource for you.

Joseph’s journey demonstrates the power of mentorship, strategic planning, and embracing new experiences. As he and Chloe embark on their next chapter in Malaysia, their story is a testament to the opportunities and rewards of an international education career.
