Established in Japan in 1951 by monks forced to leave China during the communist regime, MBIS is a coeducational school based on Roman Catholic values. According to the MBIS website, the school "emphasizes its Catholic character through its religious studies courses, by daily reflection, and by observance of the liturgical seasons of the Church year." Though founded by Catholic educators, the school welcomes ALL students regardless of religion, race, or nationality.
MBIS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The 309 K-12 students of 23 nationalities study a curriculum which adheres to the California State Standards. In Grades 11 and 12, students can choose from 11 Advanced Placement (AP) courses. MBIS would like to implement the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum by 2017. The teaching staff of 34 includes 16 from N. America and five from Japan.
MBIS is interested in hiring single and married teachers, with or without dependents, or non-teaching spouses. They will also consider exceptional, newly-certified teachers with limited experience. While interested in developing an intern program, the school is not hiring interns at this time. Teachers must have certification to obtain a work visa, which will be issued up to the age of 65.
A competitive salary and benefits package allows for a tidy savings. The school provides apartments for teachers and pays all initial costs, including a settling-in and moving stipend as well as a housing allowance large enough to cover rent, utilities, and furnishings for apartments. All teachers receive annual airfare and a full tuition benefit for each child, which teachers should note is a taxable benefit. MBIS covers local health and dental insurance and contributes 50% to a retirement plan in which the teacher pays the other half. By law, the school is required to join the Japanese Health and Pension Fund.
