American College of Greece: 140-Years of Transformative Education

Search Associates is proud to welcome the Pierce-American College of Greece (ACG) to its register of highly-regarded international schools. ACG is a non-profit three-unit educational institution: Pierce (secondary education), Deree (undergraduate, graduate, continuing and professional studies), and Alba Graduate Business School (graduate business studies).  Pierce is a selective, co-educational secondary day school consisting of a Gymnasium (grades 7-9) and Lyceum (grades 10-12) with a total enrollment of over 1,400 students. Founded in 1875 as a school originally for girls and young women, the school is a private, non-sectarian, non-profit institution, accredited and regulated by the Greek Ministry of Education. The Ministry lists Pierce among the three private schools in Greece that have been granted equivalence status to Greek public schools. The undergraduate and graduate programs of ACG are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and have been since 1981.

The Pierce mission is to provide a holistic education to shape and support the growth of intellectually independent, morally responsible, socially engaged global citizens. The school’s motto Non ministrari, sed ministrare (Not to be served but to serve) defines Pierce’s institutional character and the aspirations for students.

Pierce is located in Aghia Paraskevi, a suburb of Athens situated on the western slopes of Mt. Hymettus, about ten kilometers from the center of the city. The building was designed by a renowned Greek architect to rise along the hillside, offering magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and a splendid view of Athens.

Campus features include academic buildings with smart classrooms, dining facilities, computer and science laboratories, a library, music room, fine art studio, a theater, and an amphitheater. Athletic facilities comprise a gymnasium, outdoor swimming pool, running track, and soccer field.

The teaching staff of 153 is comprised of both dual-nationals and Greek nationals.  ACG launched its International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in September 2016, having passed its IB Organization authorization with flying colors.

Teacher-candidates must be certificated in an English-speaking country, possess an EU passport, and hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching.   There is no age limit to obtain a work visa in Greece.

ACG’s benefits package, in addition to the annual salary, includes local health insurance, life insurance, and long-term disability, with the teacher paying a percentage. Teachers may take college courses at Deree for free and enjoy complimentary use of the athletic facilities at ACG.
