Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Harare International School (HIS), Zimbabwe, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Emily Rankin as HIS's next Director to commence in August 2027.
Emily joins the HIS community from St. John’s International School in Belgium where she serves as Deputy Executive Head and Head of Academics. Prior to her current position Emily served as the Head of Upper School, Whole School Deputy Head, and the Teaching and Learning Lead at The English College in Prague, Czech Republic.
Emily holds a Superintendent License and an Education Specialist degree in Administration from the University of St Thomas Graduate School of Education in St. Paul, Minnesota as well as a Master’s degree in Teaching from Hamline University School of Graduate Education from St Paul, Minnesota. She is also a Fellow of the UK's Chartered College of Teaching.
In her announcement to the HIS community, the Chair of the Board, Mrs. Fadzai Muzorewa said,
“The Board was particularly impressed by the scope of her leadership experience at the executive level, her clarity of vision, and her ability to translate strategy into measurable outcomes. Having already operated at the whole-school level across academics, staffing, budgeting, and strategic planning, she brings the maturity, judgment, and leadership presence required for the role. Throughout the selection process, she demonstrated a thoughtful, balanced approach, combining high expectations with a strong commitment to community, collaboration, and care.
In addition to her academic leadership, Emily brings valuable experience in strengthening school positioning, enrollment, and community engagement. Her background in communications, combined with her strategic mindset, enables her to effectively articulate a school’s identity and support its long-term growth and sustainability. She is also deeply committed to fostering inclusive, high-performing school cultures, with a strong emphasis on professional growth, wellbeing, and belonging.”
The strong sense of community at HIS was particularly attractive to Emily and her family. Emily will be joined in Harare by her husband Ben, and their two children, Ilona (age 9) and Lukas (age 6). She said, "What an honor to join HIS, a thriving community that clearly values curiosity, diversity, and growth. I look forward to empowering leadership at every level so that both students and colleagues can continue to flourish as we build on the school’s many strengths."
