Bishop Mackenzie International School (Malawi)

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Bishop Mackenzie International School (BMIS), Malawi, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Simon McCloskey as the School’s next Director, commencing in August 2027.

Mr. McCloskey brings extensive international school leadership experience to BMIS. Most recently, he served as Head of School at the International School of Busan in South Korea. Prior to this, he was Head of School at Stonehill International School in Bangalore, India. His international career has also included senior leadership positions in Sudan, Thailand and Tanzania.

Mr. McCloskey has a particular connection to Malawi, having previously served as Head of School at Sir Harry Johnston International School in Zomba. His prior experience in the country, together with his extensive international leadership background, will provide a strong foundation as he takes on the leadership of BMIS.

Mr. McCloskey holds a Master’s degree in International Education Administration from Endicott College, Massachusetts, USA, a PGCE in Primary Education from Plymouth University in the UK, and a BA (Hons) in Modern European Studies and Drama from Lancaster University, UK.

In announcing Mr. McCloskey’s appointment to the BMIS community, Mr. Clayton Swart, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said:

“Throughout the process, the Board remained focused on identifying a leader who could build upon the School’s strengths while guiding BMIS confidently through its next stage of development. Simon impressed the community with his extensive leadership experience, thoughtful and approachable manner, clear educational vision, strong communication, and understanding of the strategic and financial responsibilities involved in leading an international school.

The Board believes that Simon is well placed to support high-quality learning and teaching, the wellbeing and development of our students and staff, the continued strengthening of our IB programmes and CIS accreditation, and the long-term sustainability of the School.

His appointment strongly reflects the BMIS mission:

The Board of Trustees and the BMIS community look forward to welcoming Simon and working with him as he begins his tenure as Director. His appointment comes at an exciting time for the School, and his experience, leadership and commitment to international education will be valuable as BMIS continues to build on its strengths and pursue its future aspirations."
