Yew Wah International Education Schools Open in China

Whenever a Yew Wah International Education School (YWIES) opens in China, it makes the surrounding community—and the rest of the world—become a better place. When four of those new institutions register with Search Associates, more great opportunities arise for our candidates. Based upon the Yew Chung International School model established in 1932 in Hong Kong and mainland China, these well-regarded YWIES sites are located in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Yantai, and Shanghai-Lingang.

The first of these four Yew Wah International Schools opened in Shanghai in 2004, followed by the site in Yantai; YWIES Guangzhou and Shanghai Lingang are newer, having opened their doors in September 2014 and 2015, respectively. Currently some 300-400 mostly Chinese students are enrolled at each site, while between 0 - 20% of the students are from U.K. and North America. Teaching staffs range in number from 40-76 and include an average mix of 28 Chinese teachers with 23 from North America and the U.K.

The two Founders, Dr. Betty Chan Po-king and Chairman Professor Paul Yip Kwok-wah, speak to the mission of their school:

"Wisdom, tolerance and technology are obtained mainly through learning. Committed to promoting the integration of the Eastern and Western cultures, Yew Wah International Education Foundation believes that we can adopt and enhance the best elements in the two cultures . . . China is the worlds second largest economy and most populous country. Apart from promoting the well-being of its citizens, China is also obliged to contribute to solving worldwide issues. Based in China, Yew Wah endeavors to nurture our students to be global citizens who concern themselves with global governance, helping fulfill the international responsibilities of China and contributing to world peace and the world's civilization."

The schools offer a joyful approach to learning, taking into consideration the intellectual, social, physical, and spiritual needs of the students. Teachers must be supportive of the schools' Christian values and ethos. Students are taught with a unique mix of Chinese and Western methods in a multicultural and bilingual environment. Their course of study: a blend of the Chinese National Curriculum along with a British curriculum, culminating in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), and the General Certificate of Education (GCE) A Level. In the coming years, each YWIES site plans to incorporate the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Students representing the best from the East and the West will graduate with a global perspective and the skills to attend universities within China and overseas.

YWIES offer two-year contracts to single and married teachers, with or without dependents. To obtain a work visa, teachers 60 years old and younger must have an undergraduate degree, a valid teaching license, and a minimum of two years' full-time teaching experience as a qualified teacher.

Employee benefits and an excellent salary can amount to substantial savings for teachers. Likewise, a family of four is able to live on one salary. The YWIES schools provide a moving allowance, fully-furnished housing, and roundtrip airfare every two years. The schools provide 100% tuition for up to two children, subject to approval and availability. Another benefit is a 10% gratuity per contract. In addition to life insurance, YWIES cover worldwide health insurance (except in the U.S.) and long-term disability. Professional development is provided at the Guangzhou site.
