The American School of Murcia (ASMurcia) is located in the southeastern Spanish region of Murcia, only three kilometers away from Murcia City and 35 kilometers away from the coast. The small community comprises only one classroom per grade level with no more than 20 students in each class.
Because of its small population, ASMurcia is in a wonderful position to deliver an individualized education where the three pillars of child development—cognitive, emotional, and social—are fostered. The school seeks to continuously improve through innovation. Indeed, the American School of Murcia was promoted by the educational project Educar para Ser and was even selected by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development as one of the most effective educational programs that fosters self-regulation, starting with the youngest of students.
In a lovely setting very close to a mountain, the campus encompasses outdoor spaces for play, gathering, and sport; its own theatre; sports centers; and two buildings, one for Early Years and elementary and the other for secondary students. In its kitchen, the school’s chef prepares menus especially designed for the school by Valencian chef Juan Llorca.
ASMurcia delivers the U.S. Common Core in the elementary school, followed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Currently, 120 pre-K–8 students are enrolled, 75% of whom are Spanish, with 3% from North America. The teaching staff of 15 includes four teachers from Spain and eleven from North America and the U.K. The school is undergoing the accreditation process with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
ASMurcia is a small school that offers a personalized education that focuses on fostering children’s executive functioning and growth mindset from a very young age. ASMurcia only has one group of students per grade with a maximum of 20 students per group, allowing for differentiated instruction. The school describes its extracurricular activities as “designed for each cycle of learning,” developmentally appropriate for every grade. For both Early Childhood Education and Primary students, music, dance, theater, robotics, or art therapy are offered. These activities are optional and cost 185 euros per month.
The benefits package includes a one-time moving allowance and full tuition for dependents. Other bonuses include paid lunches and after-school programs. The school also provides professional development. Local health insurance—which includes dental, long-term disability, and emergency evacuation—is fully covered and, because of the low cost of living in Murcia, the school package means some great savings or a chance for a family of four to live on one salary. Additionally, there are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners.
ASMurcia is interested in hiring international teachers of diverse profiles, including couples with a non-teaching partner, interns, outstanding newly certified candidates and experienced teachers lacking certification. Teachers need to possess academic degrees in the subject they will be teaching, and there is no age limit to obtain a work visa.
