Teach Abroad in Qingpu

Located in an outer suburb of the city, the brand new, Shanghai United International School Qingpu (SUIS Qingpu) is set to be the largest of SUIS’s 12 campuses. Within four years, the school anticipates reaching its maximum capacity of 3,000 students. For the 2019 school year, SUIS enrolled approximately 800 students, mostly Grade 1 students in the primary school as well as a number of Grade 6 students in the middle school. At present, only a small quota of students can be enrolled in other grades.

SUIS Qingpu was launched on the 25th anniversary of the founding of its parent organization, Xiehe Education Group. As a result of Xiehe’s long history, the school will benefit from its accumulated experience and wisdom, as well as its commitment to building the largest school with the most complete curriculum and facilities in Shanghai. SUIS Qingpu will also enjoy myriad resources and a highly-qualified staff.

The curriculum—bilingual from primary to middle school—will meet the requirements of the local curricula, while expatriate subject specialists will contribute to the international mindedness of the SUIS Qingpu’s community. Secondary students will prepare for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, A levels and, eventually, once the school is authorized to deliver it, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

The SUIS Qingpu campus has been designed to house standard classrooms, science laboratories, theaters, swimming pools, learning resource centers, outdoor playgrounds, large gymnasiums, and high-end teacher housing and student dorms.

The school is interested in hiring certified singles and couples, including those with a non-teaching spouse. They will also consider outstanding newly-certified candidates and those certified in non-English speaking countries. Teachers need not hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching, and those up to the age of 58 may obtain a work visa.

With more than 600 Western teachers and 2,500 local teachers across the entire organization, training is one of SUIS’s priorities. Each year, SUIS conducts in-house and cross-campus training, and invites specialists to lead professional development opportunities, for example, John Hattie (Visible Learning), James Nottingham, and P4C training. While professional development (PD) has usually been through Cambridge International Education, IB training will be provided when the school receives authorization. Teachers’ requests for other PD are also considered. The campus is a centre for CAIE professional development, and SUIS’s teachers regularly attend face-to-face training in cities across China.

SUIS Qingpu not only wishes to provide a holistic education for students, but also to provide a career path on which aspiring teachers can rise. Staff members may train for, seek, and attain leadership positions within the school.

The SUIS Qingpu benefits package includes a moving allowance as well as monthly, tax-free housing, provided that an official receipt from a landlord is submitted to the school. Many SUIS Qingpu teachers use their housing benefit to live in the more central areas of Shanghai, preferring to commute by metro or using the school’s free shuttle service to and from home. Tuition is free for two children in grade school or K2. Additional dependents receive a 50% discount. In addition to one annual round-trip airfare is an end-of-contract bonus, and another plus is free daily lunch. Worldwide health insurance—except in the U.S.—is fully covered and includes life insurance, limited dental, long-term disability, and emergency evacuation. This package amounts to some savings or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary.
