Overseas Teaching Opportunities in Myanmar

The Yangon International School (YIS) is a private, co-educational pre-K–12 day school in a suburb of Yangon, Myanmar. The beautifully landscaped campus encompasses large and well-resourced classrooms; a cafeteria; specialist rooms for music, art and IT; a very large gym; a playground and activity room; and a swimming pool. A soon-to-be-completed building will provide a new cafeteria, playground, and additional classrooms. Teacher housing is conveniently located across the street, and the lower school, serving pre-K–2, resides about three blocks away.

Myanmar is a hidden secret with an amazing culture and traditions, and Yangon is a fast-growing city. A great deal of construction in the city includes new shopping malls and hotels, and the new airport offers international flights to marvelous destinations within Southeast Asia and beyond.

Managed by International Schools Services and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, YIS delivers an American curriculum and a selection of Advanced Placement classes in the upper levels. Its small size is ideal for fostering a close-knit school community. Over 500 students currently attend, the majority of whom are Burmese, with 2 percent from North America. Most graduates attend U.S. colleges and universities. The staff of 64 is mostly North American, with an additional mix of teachers from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Myanmar, and Ireland. YIS is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools.

YIS offers a variety of extracurricular activities and both recreational and competitive athletics throughout the school year. A member of the Yangon Athletic Conference, YIS can offer students in Grades 6–12 opportunities to compete in national and international tournaments in volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, table tennis, cross country and badminton.

Elementary school clubs include music, dance, karate, chess, Food Club, Reader’s Theater, Sewing Club, Roots & Shoots, and much more. Middle and high school students can take part in the student council and school newspaper as well as service organizations, such as Building Blocks, Environmental 360, and Kanote, a high school arts program with a strong emphasis on community service. Middle School Art Club, choir, and robotics are also popular choices.

YIS also incorporates social/emotional and experiential learning into its educational program. All secondary school students are expected to attend annual Week Without Walls, which weaves academic themes into activities involving team building, self-awareness, social responsibility, and service learning. Middle school students participate in trips within Myanmar, while high school students travel further afield for a longer period of time in other Southeast Asian countries, such as Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, or China.

YIS is interested in hiring certified married teaching couples and single teachers. They will also consider couples with a non-teaching spouse, exceptional newly-certified teachers as well as those certified in a non-English speaking country. Teachers need not hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Those under the age of 62 may obtain a work visa.

The benefits package includes a non-taxed salary, a moving allowance, and fully-furnished housing. The tuition benefit is 100% for one child per teacher. YIS also provides visa assistance and related fees, a professional development allowance, and annual airfare for each teacher. The school covers half the premium of worldwide—except the U.S.—health insurance; this includes dental and emergency evacuation. The YIS package allows for some good savings.
