Nestled in the heart of Kelapa Gading, a neighborhood in North Jakarta, North Jakarta Intercultural School (NJIS) has been attracting multi-cultural students since its inception more than 25 years ago. NJIS intentionally involves students, faculty, and parents in tackling social issues in the local and, ultimately, the global community. The school is committed to unlocking each child’s power to make change by giving its students the skills and confidence necessary to be responsible human beings in an evolving world.
Fully accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges, NJIS uses the Reggio Emilia approach in early years classrooms, followed by the U.S. Common Core curriculum. Currently enrolled are 145 K–12 students, with 75% from Jakarta and 12% from North America. In the upper levels, students may take a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses along with the AP Capstone Diploma. Graduates of NJIS are prepared for a successful transition to universities all over the world. The teaching staff of 30 includes nine Indonesians and 13 North Americans.
One of the best things about NJIS is the individualized attention that all of its students receive. Small class sizes and excellent teachers with experience working with diverse student populations mean teachers can work with students individually and help take them as far as they can go.
NJIS has a reputation for superb facilities, which support the wide-ranging interests of its students as well as its school-wide learning outcomes. Along with classrooms fully-equipped with smart boards and projectors, the school boasts dedicated art and music rooms and innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) labs. NJIS also offers the best theater in Kelapa Gading—the state-of-the art, 450-person Performing Arts Center—as well as an indoor sports arena, indoor and outdoor playgrounds for children, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, canteen, library, and computer lab.
Due to housing constraints, NJIS prefers to hire experienced certified single teachers or teaching couples, with up to two children. The school will consider couples with non-teaching partners as well as those certified in a non-English speaking country. However, a teaching certificate with endorsements in one’s areas of instruction along with five years' classroom teaching experience is mandatory, and candidates must hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. The school expresses the desire for “flexible, talented, positive, and committed teachers . . . [willing] to contribute to the life and spirit of the school beyond the normal classroom teaching experience.” NJIS would prefer that secondary school teacher candidates hold a master’s degree and AP or International Baccalaureate certification. Indonesia issues work visas to certified teachers up to the age of 59.
Benefits include furnished housing inclusive of some utilities, a settling-in allowance, and annual airfare. Tuition is free for up to two children. Worldwide health insurance—except for the U.S. and Canada—is covered and includes emergency evacuation. Professional development focuses on AP training as well as opportunities provided by East Asia Regional Council of Schools. Based on local mandate, the school contributes 50% to a retirement fund, which will be given to each teacher at the end of contract. Due to the low cost of living in Indonesia, the NJIS benefits package amounts to some savings or the opportunity for a family of four to live on one salary.
