Overseas Teaching at United World College of Hong Kong

Experience overseas teaching at Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong (LPCUWC), an esteemed member of the prestigious United World College (UWC) network of 18 Schools and Colleges with the mission to educate for a peaceful and sustainable future. Opened in 1992 (the 7th oldest UWC), LPCUWC is a coed, internationa1, 100% residential college offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP) for students aged 16-19 years from over 90 nations speaking over 200+ languages. Through its holistic approach to learning, LPCUWC empowers students to become compassionate, open-minded global citizens, equipped to tackle pressing world issues. (The UWC Movement has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize two times in three years.)

Perched on the edge of Ma On Shan Country Park, the campus overlooks the breathtaking views of Starfish Bay Beach, forming a stunning backdrop for the campus. Within walking distance is the Wu Kai Sha MTR station and bus terminus, which provides an easy access transportation link to major areas such as Hong Kong CBD and Mainland China—all within an hour's reach.

In addition to LPCUWC’s strategic location is its presence in metropolitan Hong Kong, which boasts a rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking natural landscape that sets it apart from other cities across Asia. The bustling city offers a seamless blend of urban excitement and natural tranquility which allows one to easily transition between the urban hustle and the peacefulness of nature. Hong Kong’s temperate weather and panorama of picturesque islands dotting its shores attract both residents and visitors. Its unparalleled connectivity makes exploring Asia relatively easy for those teaching abroad. Overseas teachers can explore the cultural, academic, and professional opportunities in these vibrant regions.

With nautical buildings resembling a cruise ship—given the water-adjacent location—LPCUWC’s facilities fully cater to the diverse needs and interests of its students and teachers. Students engage with the natural environment and harness its potential for enriching their education. Immersive learning is reflected across “three pillars” of the student experience: Residential, Academics, and Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC).

Academics Classrooms and small class sizes are designed to facilitate interactive and engaging learning experiences. Students make excellent use of a well-resourced library; fully equipped laboratories; an assembly hall, an Amphitheatre; and an Enlightenment Centre, which provides spaces for creative expression, cultural events, and intellectual discourse.

Residential: There are four residential blocks where teachers and students are housed, providing a “home-away-from-home” that ensures a close-knit multicultural community. Each block has a common space with a kitchenette, laundry room, and study/computer room. Facilities for wellness, self-expression, and for team sports and physical fitness are also available, such as a spacious sports hall, swimming pool, tennis courts, both indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a dance studio, fitness room, and squash court. There is also a climbing wall.

EOTC: Over 60 student-led extracurricular Quan Cai activities or QC (whole person development) cater to the varied interests and passions of students. These initiatives allow students to explore creativity, physical activity, and service, such as Marine Sustainability & Coral Monitoring, Model United Nations, African Drumming, Astronomy, Dragon & Lion Dance, Kayaking, Chinese Painting & Dance, Football, Swimming, Initiative for Peace, Refugee Relief, Social Innovation Network Group, and much more. While students play a central role in driving these initiatives, dedicated teachers provide invaluable guidance and supervision, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for all participants.

LPCUWC hires experienced, certified singles and couples wishing to teach overseas, including couples with a non-teaching partner. Candidates must hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per government regulations, those up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.

The international teaching package includes a competitive salary; a moving allowance; housing, at 7.5% of one’s monthly salary; and airfare at the beginning and end of each contract. LPCUWC contributes 15% to a retirement plan and covers tuition for up to two dependents. Teachers are offered funds for professional development each year. Worldwide health insurance is provided, with the employee paying a percentage, and includes dental and long-term disability. Local employment opportunities are available for non-teaching partners.
