International School Eastern Seaboard Thailand: A Hidden Gem

One hour southeast of Bangkok, the International School Eastern Seaboard (ISE) rests in the fresh air and abundant greenery of the surrounding Burapha Golf Course. The school, established in 1993 mainly for the dependents of the manufacturing community built around a Thai deep-sea port, is now a Search Associates member school. ISE is located in a green belt, 30 minutes from the beach resort of Pattaya, and 20 minutes from Chonburi City. Many teachers live on the golf course and ride their golf carts or bicycles to work! The Bangkok airport is one hour away, with numerous flights to all destinations, providing easy access to other major Asian cities. ISE, a member of the Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA), has athletic, artistic, and cultural relationships with schools surrounding Bangkok. These relationships help to facilitate opportunities for professional development workshops in Thailand and among the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS).

ISE holds a Thai National Certificate and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Students of 27 nationalities study the U.S. Common Core Curriculum and pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Currently enrolled are 285 K–12 students, 40% of whom are Thai and 23% of whom come from North America and the U.K. A teaching staff of 32 includes five Thai teachers and 27 from North America and the U.K.

ISE is interested in hiring singles and teaching couples, married or unmarried. Single teachers may be accompanied by one dependent, and couples may bring two. The school is looking for candidates with strong technical skills, who can facilitate project-based learning in the classroom. Teachers certified in non-English speaking countries and newly-certified teachers with exceptional qualities may also apply. The school does not require candidates to have their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching; however, only certified teachers up to the age of 60 can obtain a work visa in Thailand.

Benefits include a settling-in and a monthly housing allowance appropriate to family size.  Every two years, teachers receive roundtrip airfare to their home of record. Salaries and these benefits are subject to Thai taxes. However, all dependent children living in Thailand attend school at no cost to the teacher, and each teacher receives an annual stipend for professional development, which may accumulate for up to four years. Additionally, worldwide health insurance (except in the U.S.) is fully covered as well as long-term disability and life insurance. Local dental insurance is also provided, with an annual maximum.  On an ISE contract, substantial savings are possible, especially given the low cost of living in Thailand.
