On the easternmost coast of Brazil, approximately five blocks from Boa Viagem beach, is an American school, established over 60 years ago. The American School of Recife, also known as Escola Americana do Recife (EAR), is now among Search Associates' high caliber international schools.
EAR originated in 1956, with two mothers using the curriculum from a correspondence course to teach the children of four families in a church building. By 1962, after the school community had expanded significantly, its board of directors secured a U.S. government grant to purchase 8.5 acres for a school site. Over the years, EAR has expanded its facilities within the same campus, located in a preferred urban residential area of Recife and a five-minute drive from the international airport. EAR has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)—now called AdvancEd-SAC—since 1962. The school is also certified by the State of Pernambuco Ministry of Education and Recife Municipal Education Council in Brazil.
Currently 435 pre-K–12 predominantly Brazilian students study a U.S. standards-based, college-preparatory curriculum in tandem with a Brazilian studies program, which includes mandatory Portuguese language study starting in pre-Kindergarten. High school students may choose from a variety of Advanced Placement courses. With a student-teacher ratio of 9:1, students enjoy opportunities to explore art, drama, dance, technology, government, French, and journalism. The school's website, www.ear.com.br, mentions that after-school activities, including "capoeira, tennis, dance, soccer, basketball, volleyball, sports activities, recreation and chess" provide numerous physical and social benefits. Support for language learning difficulties, and mild learning disabilities, is also available. The teaching staff of 51 includes 11 from the U.S. and 37 from Brazil. At present, 11 students are from North America and the United Kingdom.
EAR is interested in hiring married teaching couples and single teachers without dependents. Though certified teachers at any age may obtain a work visa in Brazil, EAR emphasizes that the Brazilian consulate whose jurisdiction includes the area where the employee lives must review and approve all required documentation before issuing a temporary work visa.
