Achieving Her Dreams: International Educator Nina Martinez

Though diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Nina Martinez has carried the heart and determination of a teacher, turning obstacles into opportunities. With the support of her family—a long line of educators and explorers—this young woman from a small town in New Mexico made it through, with not just success but also the desire to help others. These days she is building a wonderful career teaching abroad, with the support of Search Associates (SEARCH).

Nina began working in various schools through the AmeriCorps program after college. This led to her joining Teach for America in Arizona, which Nina says marked the beginning of her teaching career and allowed her to complete her master’s in education. She reflects,

It was a full-circle moment for me, as I could teach and serve as a role model for kids who faced similar challenges. What I love most about education is being part of shaping the future leaders of the world.

A cousin already teaching overseas told Nina all about Search Associates (SEARCH). Having traveled widely with her family since the age of three months, Nina knew that this would be the right path for her:

Once I discovered I could combine my two passions—education and travel—I packed my bags and never looked back. This journey has allowed me to embrace both my love for teaching and my desire to explore the world.

When Nina reached out to SEARCH, Jennifer Imholt became her Associate, “a great support through the process,” she says, checking in on Nina’s job search regularly and advising her on meaningful communications to schools. Nina logged onto the SEARCH platform almost every day, focusing on South America, Europe, and Central America for her new home. She couldn’t believe her eyes!

Without an agency like this, I would be blind to all the opportunities there are all around the world…I love that you are really able to explore each school and the packages they have to offer.

Three years ago, Nina took her first international school position in Barranquilla, Colombia, at Karl C. Parrish, teaching second grade. She says she “couldn’t have asked for a better first international experience,” instantly falling in love with the culture, the people, her students, and the “incredibly supportive leadership.” Those two rewarding two years empowered her to seek her next international school adventure.

Back on the SEARCH platform, Nina found, applied, interviewed, and accepted her second appointment, teaching second-grade position at Pan American School de Bahia, Brazil. She is now well into her first year there, incredibly grateful for the supportive and inspiring community who paved the way for a smooth transition.

Looking back, Nina shares her personal litmus test for making a final decision, once she has researched an international school and its city:

I knew I had made the right choices when I felt their genuine commitment to both the quality of education and the well-being of their staff. The administration teams were incredibly supportive, providing me with valuable information and connecting me with current employee. It’s comforting to have someone who understands the challenges of picking up your life and moving to a new place on your own.

For Nina, navigating different cultural norms, educational systems, and language barriers has enhanced her adaptability and global awareness. Unique experiences have contributed to her personal growth. Like Nina, you can achieve your dreams…with a little support, the kind that Search Associates and great school leaders provide. She adds,

My advice? Take the leap! There’s no harm in exploring the possibilities that await you. Making the decision to move has been the best choice of my life. Some days, I still find it hard to believe I’m living in a different country, immersing myself in diverse cultures, and doing what I love. It’s been a journey full of unforgettable experiences and invaluable lessons!
