Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer

The American School in Japan

Beginning August 1, 2017

 

The American School in Japan seeks an exceptional leader to serve as Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer (CFO/COO) beginning August 1, 2017. The CFO/COO is a member of ASIJ’s senior leadership team and reports to the ASIJ Head of School. The CFO/COO works in collaboration with the Head of School and the Board of Directors’ Finance, Facilities Planning and Personnel committees to oversee the finances and operations of the School. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for helping to support the school’s academic and co-curricular programs. The School is in the process of developing a long-term facilities and financing strategy and seeks a candidate interested in making a long-term commitment to the school.

 

Areas of Responsibility

Finance

  • Oversee accounting operations and staff of 8 people
  • Oversee $40 million annual budget
  • Work with Board Finance Committee on strategic financial planning, investments, debt, and overall financial operations
  • Oversee operating and capital reserve funding
  • Oversee annual audit process
  • Oversee annual insurance and risk management position

 

Facilities

  • Supervise Maintenance Manager
  • Provide oversight in collaboration with Maintenance Manager of daily building and maintenance operations both short- and long-term, with staff of 20 people
  • Work with Facilities Planning Committee to develop long-term facilities plan
  • Oversee major building projects, including selection of architects and contractors, financial controls, and communication with faculty/staff, Board committees and community

 

Security

  • Oversee campus security, including serving as liaison with local police, US Embassy Regional Security Officer and other security experts
  • Update and maintain emergency manual, supplies and training

 

Human Resources

  • Oversee implementation of personnel policies
  • Work with Faculty/Staff Committee on personnel issues
  • Work with Personnel Committee of the Board to review and rewrite personnel policies
  • Work with legal counsel when personnel issues arise
  • Maintain knowledge of Japanese labor laws and practices
  • Maintain knowledge of immigration laws and practices

 

Transportation

  • Supervise Director of Transportation
  • Provide oversight in collaboration with Director of Transportation of 6-day-per-week bus system that includes 29 buses, 1200 daily riders, 30 bus drivers, 150 student bus monitors, 180 bus stops, and a bus director.

 

Summer Day Camp

  • Supervise Summer Day Camp (SDC) Director
  • Provide oversight in collaboration with SDC Director of a 4-week summer camp program with 2000 students, two campuses, 300 employees, and 3 full-time staff

 

Food service

  • Supervise Cafeteria Manager
  • Provide oversight in collaboration with Cafeteria Manager on food service system that serves 800 meals daily with a staff of 20, a kiosk and other school catering


The American School in Japan

ASIJ is Tokyo’s oldest (founded in 1902) and largest international school. Well-respected within the international school community, ASIJ provides a college-prep curriculum that is enriched by high-quality facilities, curricular innovation, talented faculty and staff, a broad range of activities and athletics, and an engaged parent community.

 

ASIJ is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and provides a rigorous curriculum with over 20 Advanced Placement offerings at the high-school level. Graduates attend top colleges and universities worldwide. The ASIJ student body as a whole consists of US citizens (41%), US/Japan dual citizens (25%), Japanese citizens/Japanese dual citizens (18%), and students from other nations (16%).

 


TOKYO

ASIJ’s main campus and the CFO/COO’s office are in the western Tokyo suburb of Chofu. Tokyo has four seasons and rarely receives accumulations of snow. Spring and fall are very comfortable. July, August, and September tend to be hot and humid. Air quality is good and radiation levels in Tokyo are comparable to those of any major international city.

 

Required qualifications for the ASIJ CFO/COO:

  • Demonstrated success as a school administrator
  • Ten years of leadership experience in accounting, educational finance and school business operations
  • Competency in the areas of human resources, facilities planning, security and risk management
  • A proven track record of working effectively with various constituencies in a culturally-diverse setting in the candidate’s home country and/or in an international school
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Japanese and English
  • Master’s degree or above in education administration or other professional degree(s)
